Katarina Witt started skating at the age of five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent, and she gained entry to a private school that caters for kids with a flair for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. This is where she saw her trainer Jutta M ller. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. Then, she was dominating the sport with the grace and elegance she displayed. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's silver medal in figure skating following a close-fought competition. She won a much closer competition the following year. In fact, she was not a winner in the free-skating contest, but won gold based on results during the compulsory figure and short programme. Witt became the first female to be crowned champion in the men's and women's figure-skating competitions in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful as an actor. Although she didn't get a medal, she impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
